More garbage space predicted

Cayman’s Mount Garbage dump could have more than seven years life left in it if it is re-organised.

Minister Arden McLean told the Finance Committee Monday afternoon that he had asked the Department of Environmental Health to look at reorganising the dump and if that was done they could probably get another seven to 10 years use out of it.

The news came committee members met for a short time as part of the Legislative Assembly’s consideration of the Supplementary Appropriation (July to June 2005) (No.2) Bill 2005.

Among items being considered, Finance Committee approved a supplementary appropriation for $4.9 million in respect of hurricane debris removal.

Leader of Government Business Kurt Tibbetts, who told the House some of the money had already been spent, said it was believed the best thing was for the DEH to get the necessary equipment to complete the debris clean up.

There were 4,500 vehicles at the dump, which needed to be crushed. When the equipment was there and the work was done, there would be more space, he said.

There was money to be made from selling the metal and from a business standpoint it was a sound business decision for the DEH to get the equipment and have use of it for now and for the years to come, he added.

Finance Committee heard there were also 30,000 to 40,000 tyres awaiting disposal and that equipment was coming to deal with those.

Mr. McLean said he was surprised when he learned how much more life could be got out of the dump at Mount Garbage, said to be 50-feet to 60-feet high at its highest point and sometimes described as the highest mount in Cayman – if it was reorganised.

He was questioned about the situation concerning the several thousand tons of ash to be disposed of and said the special cell for that was now completed.

He told the House the lining needed to go into the cell would be here in the next few weeks.
