House numbers must be displayed

Your number could just be up one day if your house number is not properly displayed.

In order to help their potentially life saving response times, Cayman’s emergency services are urging the public to make sure their house numbers are displayed in accordance with the law.

‘Time is of the essence in dealing with emergency situations. Seconds can make all the difference in the world,’ Fire Department Divisional Officer Rosworth McLoughlin said.

‘Occasionally we do experience some difficulty trying to identify a property when we are called upon to respond to an emergency,’ he said.

‘It is of paramount importance that property-owners display their street numbers as it will save time in our identification of the property for people needing fire related assistance,’ said Mr. McLoughlin.

‘While it is not a major problem, we are appealing to those property owners who are in breach of the requirement, to display the numbers,’ he said.

‘All property owners are reminded that the onus is on them to comply with the law for the display of their property numbers.

‘And it is in their own interests to do so because it could possibly one day save the life of somebody,’ he added.

‘There are still some concerns with some home owners not displaying their assigned house numbers,’ said 911 Emergency Communications Centre assistant manager Sonji Myles.

‘This makes it difficult for emergency agencies that are responding to accurately identify incident locations,’ he said.

‘The more cooperation that the public gives the emergency agencies enables them to respond quicker,’ he said.

‘Response time is vital and minutes saved could be critical,’ he stressed.

‘Another concern is that the public should be in a position to accurately describe the location or give directions to 911,’ said Mr. Myles.

Details such as the exact name of the road, a description of the location, of areas adjacent to it and other geographical references can all assist the response, he said.
