Beckles thrills but saddened

Now into Week 3 the TeleCayman Team Squash League is well on its way with some great action this past Thursday.

The league runs every Thursday at 7.15 pm until 1 December, with the exception of 24 November due to the South Sound Squach Club Championships and Christmas Party.

Teams represented for the fall league consist of sponsored teams Team Walkers, Team Island Heritage, Team NCB Group, Team Sothebys International Realty, Team KPMG and Team Marsh. Two teams made up of individual players, named after world top squash players are Team Nicol David, current world number one and Team Ramy Ashour, battling to maintain his world number one position.

The most incredible match from week 3 was between Team KPMG’s Rob Arthur and Team Marsh’s, Fernando Beckles. Two of the five games went extra points as each player was gusty and determined to win. Back and forth with each game Arthur took the first 13/11, Beckles the second 11/9 tying the match at one a piece. A long fought third game went in over points to Arthur 15/13, however Beckles was not ready to go down winning the fourth 11/7.

Leaving it to the end, with the crowd now enjoying a refreshing pint, Arthur outlasted Beckles winning the fifth and deciding game 11/7. A big thank went to Mike Bowden who refereed and kept score for this epic battle of grunts, groan and “let please” calls.

Another impressive encounter was Team Walkers Djon Brown against a Team Nicol David substitute, Cayman Junior Team member, Lara Conolly. What looked to be a close 3-0 win for Brown was interrupted as Conolly took the third game making the match a little more serious for Djon entering the fourth. Back to the basics and head down Djon managed to win the fourth and final game taking the match for Team Walkers. Final match score was; 11/9, 11/9, 7/11, 11/7.

One final match well worthy of mention was between two of the top female players on the island, Alison Strobridge, representing Team Walkers and Jackie Geils, playing for Team Nicol David. Both demonstrated great tactical skills had some super rallies and while good friends off the court, while on the court, both are want victory. In the end, it was Geils taking the win for Team Nicol David 3-1 (11/8, 10/12, 11/1, 11/9).
