The TeleCayman Team Squash League had its fourth week of competition last Thursday and even though there were some pretty quick matches, once again there were a few close and exciting ones that deserved medals for sheer entertainment.
Teams represented for the fall league consist of sponsored teams; Team Walkers, Team Island Heritage, Team NCB Group, Team Sothebys International Realty, Team KPMG and Team Marsh. Two teams made up of individual players, named after world top squash player is Team Nicol David, current world number one and Team Ramy Ashour, battling to maintain his world number one position.
There were two great matches, which probably were the best of the night, but it has to be handed to a couple who off the court are partners, but on the court showed no compassion toward each other and it was all business. Carlo Artana, representing Team Nicol David took on Trina Savage from Team Ramy Ashour and this match went a back and forth five setter. Artana took the first game 11/6, with Savage fighting for the second game winning 11/9. The third and the forth were identical scores as Artana took the third 11/6 and the fourth went to Savage 11/6. Entering into the fifth game and a few people witnessing what could be a great win for Savage watched as Artana took the game 11/4.
The second contender was between Team Marsh’s Fernando Beckles who seems to be have many great matches these past few weeks, took on Team NCB Group’s Matthew Wight. Beckles started fast and won the first two games fairly convincingly. Beckles, unable to close the match bowed to Matthew the next two games, with the fourth game going to over-points 13/11. This too left both players entering into the fifth and deciding game, however, Beckles’ fitness played through as he took the game 11/5.
The third pick for the evening was Cayman National team members Chantelle Day, representing Team Ramy Ashour against Jackie Geils for Team Nicol David. Jackie ended up winning the match 3-1, however, three out of four games went into over-points for Geils.
