Race crabs, catboats and pooh sticks on Monday

Monday is Remembrance Day Holiday, which for the lucky ones means no work or no school – and an extra time for frolicking on the beach.

Head down to Seven Mile Beach for a day of fun in the sun with plenty of Pirates Week related entertainment.

The first ever Remembrance Day Catboat race, organised by Camana Bay, takes place on Monday, 14 November. Although Camana Bay has long sponsored the Catboat Club, this is the first year that a Camana Bay Championship will be held, said Davina Tresidder, Camana Bay events manager.

Racing begins at 11 am and the course will take the catboat crews from Royal Palms to the Marriott and back. All the land based action will be taking place on the beach in front of Royal Palms, with talks on the history of catboats, an MC from Rooster FM and a live performance by Swanky Kitchen Band.

Catboat sailors have been steadily racking up points during races earlier in the year and the four Remembrance Day races will be their final chance to accumulate enough points to take home the title of Camana Bay National Catboat Champion, for the first time ever. There will, however, also be a prize for the winner that day.

A whole host of entertainment for children will be laid on, ensuring they are not bored for a moment. There will be a mini-treasure hunt, pooh stick racing in the sea, crab racing on the beach, conch horn blowing and more.

Camana Bay organisers have also commissioned a unique piece of art from Franklin Manderson. A silent auction for this will be held and the proceeds from it will go toward refurbishing the Catboat Clubhouse at Whitehall Bay, which was badly damaged during Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
