Leos help protect dog walkers

The Cayman Islands Humane Society relies on volunteer dog walkers to see to it the dogs housed at the organisation’s shelter on North Sound Road get a decent amount of exercise. Yet the shelter’s location means dog walkers have to cross a busy road in order to get to areas where they can give the dogs a proper workout.

The Leo Club of Grand Cayman donated two road signs to the humane society recently to help make drivers aware of the presence of dog walkers along the road.

“There was an incident a while back related to a volunteer dog walker crossing the road by the Cayman Island Humane Society and the Leo Club of Grand Cayman saw the need to assist.

With the help of the National Road Authority, the Leo Club of Grand Cayman was able to donate two road signs ‘Dog Crossing – Slow Down’,” said Kedeshia Dunn-Thomas, assistant project chairperson with the Leo Club of Grand Cayman.

“We hope that the dog signs will be effective in that zone and drivers will respect the speed limit and also the volunteer dog walkers.”

Twila Escalante, shelter liaison with the humane society, said the organisation appreciated the donation.

“I wish to thank the Leo Club for their partnership and sponsorship of the dog walking signs.

The signs generously provided by the Leo Club will alert motorists to slow down and be on a look out for our volunteers and the dogs to walk safely in what is a heavy traffic area,” she said.

Ms Escalante said the dog walking volunteers play an important role at the shelter when it comes to improving the quality of life of the dogs.

“Thank you to all of our dedicated volunteer dog walkers who freely give their time every week to walk our shelter buddies and provide them with a much needed break from the shelter,” she said.
