Pirates invade Lockwood memorial

Mike Lockwood is synonymous with Pirates Week and to no surprise swashbucklers were in abundance at a swim meet bearing the Lockwood name.

The Lions Pool in George Town staged the annual Mike Lockwood Memorial Swim last week. The competition attracted youngsters in the Under-20 age group from across the Cayman Islands in addition to a few pirates.

Meet director Melanie Solomon, who had help from volunteers like meet referee Adam Roberts, states the event was a success.

“We had one Lions pool record broken and a few Stingray records broken,” Solomon said. “We had 102 different events including relays and 145 swimmers in total.

“Mike Lockwood’s son Mike Jr. was there to open the meet with a few words about his father’s dedication to both swimming and Pirates Week. He was also one of two pirate swimmers who competed in the 15 and over 50m freestyle event, finishing seventh in 28.32 seconds (the other was William Balderamos, who placed sixth in 28.16s). The pirates came by on Saturday much to the delight of all the kids and sang a few songs for us.

“If it wasn’t for the help of many volunteers, this annual event could not go as smoothly as it did. A big thanks to all that helped.”

The swim, hosted by the Stingray Swim Club, has been touted over the years for its international flair. The 2011 edition would not disappoint as a pair of visiting teams came down for the meet in Jamaica’s Y-speedos and the Cayman Brac Barracudas. Both would finish third and fourth respectively in the team standings, with the Camana Bay Aquatic Club and Stingray Swim Club earning the top marks.

To no surprise a number of established swimmers competed in the event. Among them was Geoffrey Butler, 15, who won the 15 and over 50m free in 26.81s.

Many youngsters came away with medals for being the high point winners in their age group. They were Bradford Green (Stingray) and Veandra Robinson (Barracudas) in the six and under, Corey Westerborg (Stingray) and Amelia Black (Camana Bay) in the seven and eight, Cameron Brown (Jamaica) and Michae Bradshaw (Jamaica) in the nine and 10, Sam Burnstein (Camana Bay) and Angara Sinclaire (Jamaica) in the 11-12, Simon Butler (Stingray) and Coral Tomascik (Camana Bay) in the 13-14 and Geoffrey Butler (Stingray) and Danielle Booth (Camana Bay) in the 15 and over age groups.
