We pray this isn’t going to be a long hot summer when it comes to road fatalities on Grand Cayman.
We lost another young Caymanian male to a needless crash early Wednesday morning, shortly after midnight.
The exact cause of the crash isn’t known. The age of the driver and make of the car would lead us to believe that speed was at least one of the factors involved.
The death makes his the fourth road fatality for this year. Seven people lost their lives on Cayman’s roadways in 2010, so we’re more than halfway there.
That’s not good.
Everyone – young and old – should use more caution on our roadways.
According to weather predictors, we’re about to be inundated with rain on Grand Cayman and it’s always amazing how people on this Island forget how to slow down and cautiously drive their vehicles when the roads get wet.
Then there are the bad habits of people – buses and taxis included – just stopping in a lane of traffic to let someone out, pick up a ride or just have a chat.
And it seems most drivers aren’t aware of what all the equipment in their vehicles is for, especially turn indicators.
But we digress. We all know that there are bad drivers on our roads and that less than favourable driving conditions make drivers with poor skills even worse.
To the family of the young man who left us Wednesday morning, you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are deeply sorry for your loss.
It is our prayer that the female passenger who was taken to hospital makes a speedy recovery and gets past this tragedy in her life.
And it is our plea to the friends of these young people and to all young folk in our Islands to take time to slow down and be careful while behind the wheel of a moving vehicle. And please, don’t drink and drive.
The life you save could indeed be your own.
