Pascal will throw in France

Alex Pascal is on his way to France.

The top-rated javelin thrower has qualified for the International Association of Athletics Federations World Youth championship for track and field taking place in France 6-10 July. Pascal, 16, reached the qualifying mark at the annual Baytaf athletics meet held at the University of South Florida last month.

Pascal, who stars with national track and field coach Kenrick Williams’ Hy-Tek club, earned gold in the young men’s javelin event for that meet. There to witness Pascal’s performance, along with his Mustang track team, was local track coach Tyrone Yen.

Yen states Pascal, who turns 17 in October, had a good mark for Cayman athletics.

“Alex had a very remarkable performance,” Yen said. “He not only broke the long-standing record at the meet of Cayman’s own Carlos Morgan (160.05ft) but he qualified for the world youth championship with a heave of 197.07ft. He won one of the team’s 13 gold medals and it’s a big deal. He’s going to be a busy young man this year as he is gearing up for the Commonwealth games and the Pan-Am junior championships this summer.

“It was a personal best for him and the Mustang family wishes him all the best in his future endeavours. On behalf of the Mustang organization coach Elroy Allen and managers Deseree Tulloch and Sana Tugman, we would like to say a big thank you to all our valued sponsors who made this trip a reality. To all the parents who travelled with the team, we look forward to your continued support in improving the sport of athletics in the Cayman Islands.”

For the record Pascal was sponsored for the Florida trip by members of his native Bodden Town community. Elected government officials Dwayne ‘John John’ Seymour and Sports minister Mark Scotland were sponsors alongside Carlington Dawson of BluePrint Construction, Lucy Wood and Dominic Williams of Publix grocery store and Ernest Ebanks of Body Sculpture.
