Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Lee reported on Monday that there are 42 new cases of community transmission of COVID-19, of which 19 are children.
This is in addition to 11 travellers, who returned positive results at their quarantine exit tests, he said.
“The community rate is in line with the daily rate over the last two weeks, but I am reporting results over the last three days,” Lee explained.
He also identified the Delta variant in the genomic sequencing of 11 samples with a high enough viral load to be tested, split between four travellers and seven cases of community transmission, of which five were children.
Since Friday, 1,662 PCR tests have been conducted in total across the islands.
Speaking in a video update, Lee stated this would be equivalent to the UK carrying out 1.7 million PCR tests over the weekend.
“We’re around one thousand times smaller [than the UK]” Lee said.
“It’s really a phenomenal result,” he stated, as he thanked laboratory staff for their efforts.
Vaccination update
There have now been 110,533 vaccinations given in total across Cayman, Lee said.
Of that total, 55,887 are first doses, representing 79% of the estimated population; 53,530 people, or 75%, have completed the two-dose course.
In addition, 1,116 people (6%) have had a third, or booster, dose. The latest vaccination schedule, in addition to eligibility criteria, can be found here.
West Bay Post Office remains closed
Meanwhile, West Bay Post Office remained closed today, after an employee tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend.
According to a government press release, the employee did not report for work on Friday after feeling unwell, and wore a mask to work on Thursday.
The release stated that West Bay Post Office was “initially thoroughly sprayed with Lysol after management learned the employee was experiencing flu-like symptoms”.
It added that staff have been wearing personal protective equipment at work, but, as a precaution, mail that had been delivered to post boxes would be removed before being sanitised and redistributed. Members of the public are asked to avoid the location until this process has been completed.
The post office will reopen as soon as it receives clearance from Public Health.

OMG! Hilarious that they ACTUALLY think that “removing the mail and sanitizing it” will stop the spread of COVID and have any effect on what this virus is doing. We really have become and idiotic society.
But is anyone actually sick with Covid or in hospital ??
