Alfredo Whittaker has been re-elected as the Cayman Islands Football Association president after an unopposed campaign.
His confirmation to the four-year seat was made official during the 2021 CIFA Congress on Saturday, 4 Dec., at The Westin.
Dion Brandon also ran unopposed, thereby securing his position as CIFA vice president, while Jennifer Powery was appointed as the new deputy general secretary, replacing Wendy Fisher.
Whittaker’s campaign leading up to the elections was not all smooth sailing. Earlier this year, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee fined CIFA US$55,500 and banned Whittaker from official duties involving national team competition for six months. The sanctions related to incidents regarding COVID testing at a World Cup qualifying match between the Cayman Islands and Canada held in Bradenton, Florida (USA) on 29 March.
During that ban, which has now been lifted, Whittaker also faced criticism from senior male national players.
Under Whittaker’s tenure as president, Cayman’s national women’s teams have been the most successful to-date. Both the under-20 and senior women went undefeated in every match played in 2021, with the U20s recently advancing to the CONCACAF Women’s Championship back in September.
“Being re-elected means satisfaction for me,” Whittaker said, as he looked forward to the next four years, where he planned “to be a better person… a better administrator… a better leader”, while continuing “the growth of football in the Cayman Islands”.
Whittaker added that he will use his “experience gained for the past four years to make this place [CIFA] better.”
“We are looking forward to fulfil and complete, not only our projects, but the dreams of many young players that are coming up… To get the Cayman Islands national teams in every single CONCACAF final,” Whittaker said, adding that he wanted to get local football clubs to a stage where they could represent Cayman at the Caribbean Football Union level.
