The 2022 Harneys Gaelic Football League kicked off at Cayman International School field on Sunday, 6 Feb., with a record 18 teams playing.

“It’s the largest season we’ve ever had,” Cathal McGrath, chairman of the Cayman Gaelic Football Association, told the Cayman Compass.

The association welcomed four new teams this year. The league now has 10 men’s teams and eight women’s teams, bringing the number of registered players up to almost 500, according to McGrath.

“The last season we had eight men’s teams and six girls’ teams,” he said. “[We] got about 200 new sign-ups”, about evenly split between the men and the women players.

Expatriate players have heavily dominated the sport in Cayman for many years. However, McGrath said that is slowing changing. When asked about getting more Caymanians involved to grow the local popularity of the sport, he responded, “It’s getting better.”
