In a tight, high-quality contest, Cú Chulainns and Na Fianna showed why they have championship aspirations this season.

Cú Chulainns, aided by five points from Alan Kelly and three more from James Murphy, held a one-point lead in the second half, until Murphy punched an unfortunate own goal, which swung the game into Na Fianna’s favour. A second goal from Eamon Gough-Duffin finished Cú Chulainns off, with Na Fianna winning 2-7 to 0-9.

In the opening game, Claremont faced off against Western Gaels. The over 40s, belying their age profile, made a fast start, with goals from Tom Elliot and Podge Brosnan helping them open up an eight-point lead at half time. Western Gaels led by Jan-George van Wyk and Conor Byrne launched a rousing comeback and led late on, before a rare Curtis Wilson kicked goal helped extend Claremont’s unbeaten run to four matches. 3-6 to 3-4 was the final score.

In the next match, the Shamrocks defeated Magheracloone. On a day of surprising results, this was not one of them. Magheracloone have had horrendous luck with injuries, which continued here when star man Frank Farrell suffered a serious-looking knee injury. The Shamrocks showed no mercy, hitting the hapless Magheracloone defence for four goals, eventually running out 4-8 to 3-1 winners.
