Children aged 5-11 will be able to get their COVID-19 vaccines at clinics across Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands starting from Saturday, 26 Feb.
The specially sized paediatric doses arrived on island last week.
The vaccination clinics for children in this age group will be held by appointment only.
In a statement issued by Public Health on Monday night, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Samuel Williams-Rodriguez said the vaccine has gone through quality-control checks and will be rolled out starting this week.
“Public Health nurses will be administering these vaccines at the dedicated clinics according to the newly released schedule,” he said. “The vaccine for children (paediatric presentation) will be administered 12 weeks apart between the first and second dose. For those vulnerable children who already received the first dose with the adult COVID-19 vaccine, the second dose will be given at least 8 weeks apart and they have been scheduled accordingly.”
Children with medical conditions that put them at higher risk than their peers of becoming seriously ill with COVID were given access to vaccines last month.
Health Minister Sabrina Turner said in the statement, “We are very fortunate to be able to provide vaccination coverage for the children of the Cayman Islands, especially as we further ease restrictions and welcome more visitors to our shores.”

She added, “I implore parents and guardians to do their best research on the vaccines, have open dialogue with their children about why being vaccinated against COVID-19 is so important and to take advantage of the protection available for their children.”
Public Health noted that the childhood vaccines will not be administered at the regular COVID vaccination clinic, but will be available at the following locations and dates.
