Police have identified Justin Kyle Jackson as the man they are searching for in relation to Friday night’s operation. He is believed to be violent, armed and dangerous.
In that operation, police confirmed one shot was fired by a pursuing tactical police officer. Jackson and another man had fled after being stopped by officers.
A firearm was seized, and one man was arrested in that incident. Jackson evaded capture.
On Saturday morning, police released Jackson’s name and image, appealing to the public for information on his location.
He was last known to be living in the West Bay area.
Police previously circulated Jackson’s image one week ago, on Friday, 22 April, together with an image of Gail Michelle Ross, 45, in relation to a recall by Her Majesty’s Prison Service to HMP Northward and HMP Fairbanks, having breached the terms of his conditional release.
Police advise against approaching Jackson if seen.
Investigators are encouraging anyone with information about Jackson’s whereabouts to call the George Town Police Station at 949-4222, or dial 911 if the circumstances are time sensitive.
Police are appealing to Jackson to turn himself in at the Cayman Islands Detention Centre, the nearest police station, or the prison, at any time, day or night.
Police reminded that according to the Police Act (2021 Revision), it is an offence to obstruct, mislead or act in such a way as to prevent the apprehension of a person who has committed an offence. If prosecuted under this section, a person is liable on conviction to a fine of $5,000 or imprisonment for two years or both.
ORIGINAL STORY: Cayman’s armed police unit will continue to be visible on local roads as the search for a suspect believed to be armed continues, Detective Superintendent Peter Lansdown has said.
In a statement Saturday morning, Lansdown said the additional visibility is also in response to the recent upsurge in gun-related crimes.
While he said police understood Friday night’s activity attracted heightened public awareness, he appealed for the public’s continued cooperation.
“This operation was a direct result of our heightened policing response to recent firearms incidents. The public will see more officers, particularly firearms officers, conducting operations,” he said in the statement.
He said officers will continue efforts to locate the individual, and asked the public to contact police if they know anything about the man’s movements.
This week, Cayman registered two murders within days of each other, both gun-related.
On Thursday morning, Crown witness Cain Thomas was found executed.
Two men were held for that killing.
On Monday, Harry Elliott was fatally shot. Police have arrested two suspects in that murder.
Investigations are continuing on both murders.
Gun found, one arrested
Friday night’s operation was triggered after a police check and resulted in several road blocks in efforts to locate and apprehend the two men. One of the roadblocks was at the Yacht Club roundabout.
Police said that shortly after 6pm on Friday, 29 April, the Tactical Firearms Response Unit had reason to stop a vehicle to carry out a search on Yacht Drive, West Bay.
As the vehicle came to a halt, two male occupants jumped out and ran off. Police pursued and apprehended one of the men, a 20-year-old Bodden Town resident. One firearm was recovered from the vehicle.
The man was detained for possession of an unlicensed firearm and remains in custody.
The vehicle, a white Toyota Yaris, was recovered by police and will be examined for forensic evidence.
The other man remains on the run.
As he made his escape, police proceeded to pursue him across multiple locations in the vicinity of West Bay Road.
The man is believed to have a firearm.
Police said a single shot was fired by a tactical firearms officer during the pursuit.
No injuries were reported.
The search for the man was stood down shortly after 9pm.
Lansdown thanked the public for cooperating with the police during the operation and “in allowing us to carry out our duties”.
