Rough weather on the horizon

Forecasters warn the system could arrive in Cayman by Tuesday 30 Aug.

Regional and local forecasters are warning of a pending storm on the horizon, that is expected to drift into the Cayman area by Tuesday next week.

The system, which is currently in the eastern Caribbean Sea, poses no immediate threat to the Cayman Islands.

In its 2pm weather outlook, the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, said the system was a “trough of low pressure” producing limited showers and thunderstorm activity.

“Environmental conditions could become more conducive for slow development of this system during the early or middle part of the next week while it moves generally westward at 10 to 15 mph across the central and northwestern Caribbean Sea,” the NHC stated.

It says the system has a near 0% chance of further formation during the next 48 hours and a near 20% over the course of the next five days.

Further east, another system, which has been described as “a broad and complex area of low pressure” is producing disorganised showers and thunderstorms.

“The interaction of this feature with an approaching tropical wave could support some gradual development of the system during the early and middle parts of the next week, while moves slowly westward to the west-northwest across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic,” the NHC forecast reads.

In its afternoon forecast, the Cayman Islands National Weather Service said a system has drifted west towards the Yucatan Peninsula, and “a decrease in shower activity is expected from this afternoon”.
