The impact of seasonal storm and wave action along Seven Mile Beach is starkly illustrated in a stunning series of aerial photographs.

Shot by the Department of Environment, in May and September of this year, the drone photography shows the staggering scale of the erosion on the beach in a few short months.

The DoE stresses that beaches come and go, their contours ebbing and flowing at the whim of seasonal storms. But experts caution that buildings on the active beach, including pools and sea walls, are contributing to a net loss of sand from the system.

Using the photographs from the department’s drone surveys, the Compass has created an interactive series of slider images, which show the change in the shoreline at different points on Seven Mile Beach.

The images on the left are from May of this year. The images on the right were shot in September – shortly after Hurricane Ian passed close to the island, causing further loss of beach in some areas.
