Football fans in Cayman will be able to watch key Word Cup games free of charge after regulators brokered a deal with cable company Logic, which had secured exclusive rights for the tournament.

While Logic will be the only provider able to show every game of the four-week tournament, the agreement means key matches, including the final, can be shown free-to-air on the government channel CIG TV. The unprecedented rights-sharing deal extends to the government channels carried by C3 and FLOW.

The agreement ensure that non-Logic customers will not miss the most watched sporting event on the global calendar.

Deputy Premier Chris Saunders said the deal was an “historic win for every football fan in the Cayman Islands”.

He said he had long championed the cause of ensuring events of national importance are available to all free of charge. Legislation exists in the UK to protect the public’s right to see major events like the World Cup, and Saunders wants to see similar policy here.

He said, “I hope that this unprecedented achievement ushers in a new level of cooperation amongst television providers in the best interest of our people.”

Logic leaders said they had agreed to share their rights in the best interest of customers.

CEO Siobhan James-Alexander said, “We know that everyone becomes a football fan during World Cup.

“It is important to us that we are able to extend the experience to more than just our customers. Cayman is a true melting pot of countries, we are happy to share in the excitement that is generated over the period, especially with all the different nationalities that form part of the Cayman community.”

The free-to-air games can be watched on Logic’s over-the-air CIGTV broadcast channel, and all 64 World Cup games are on Logic cable channels 500 and 501. FLOW channel 106 and C3 channel 3 will also show the 22 free-to-air games.

The World Cup began on Sunday with Ecuador’s win over Qatar. England got their campaign off to a flying start Monday with a 6-2 win over Iran.

  1. How did Logic acquire exclusive rights in the first place when all Flow seems to acquire are rights to cricket matches in every conceivable country often with “crowds” numbering less than 100., and no more live Premier League games.
