Letter to the Editor: Why Cayman pays more than the UK for Internet service

Dear Editor,

Thank you for continuing to provide space for public discussion on issues that matter to Cayman’s households and businesses. We read with interest the Letter to the Editor published on 5 Jan. 2026, “Cayman pays up to seven times more than UK for internet access”, and we appreciate the author raising concerns about affordability and access.

Because this topic is understandably important — and because it deserves a careful, factual explanation — the Office prepared a comprehensive written response. However, the full statement is longer than a typical letter due to the need to address international comparisons, small-island cost structures, and the regulatory context in a clear and evidence-based way. For that reason, we have published the full response on our website at ofreg.ky/news, where it is available to the public.

At a high level, the statement:

  • Recognises the affordability concerns being raised by the public;
  • Provides independent international and regional comparisons to put Cayman’s pricing in context;
  • Explains key structural factors that influence costs in small island markets; and
  • Summarises the regulatory work underway to support fair pricing, effective competition and consumer protection.

We are sharing this as part of our commitment to transparency and meaningful engagement with our stakeholders, the industry, and the wider community. We would be grateful if you would consider publishing this note and directing readers to the full statement on our website for the complete detail and supporting information.
