Four people were detained by police following the discovery of a loaded 9mm handgun, an AK-47 assault rifle and a significant amount of ganja at a George Town property on Monday afternoon.

Police, in a press release on the seizure of the weapons, said the four individuals – three men aged 39, 42 and 44, and a 56-year-old woman, all of George Town – were arrested on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm, and have been granted bail while investigations continue.

Police estimated that more than 100 pounds of ganja was recovered at the scene on Monday.

The incident occurred just after 3:30pm when uniformed police officers were carrying out patrols on Shedden Road, George Town, in the vicinity of Liberty Lane.

Initially, police said, officers observed a man they knew behaving suspiciously and approached him.

However, he ran off along Liberty Lane.

The officers chased the man and came upon two other men outside a residence. They attempted to prevent the officers entering the property.

While speaking to the officers, the two men fled on foot.

The officers reportedly detected the strong scent of ganja on the property, and recovered a significant quantity of the drug.

Additional assistance was requested from other police units and a further search of the area was carried out, police said, with additional help from Customs and Border Control.

Officers found more ganja on the property and also recovered two firearms: the loaded handgun with a loaded extended magazine, and the AK-47 assault rifle and magazine.

Police said a large quantity of AK-47 ammunition was also recovered from the scene.

Investigations are continuing.
