A second day of search and rescue efforts resumed for two missing Cuban refugees whose vessel capsized off the coast of Cayman Brac.

Taking to social media on Sunday 1 Oct., the Cayman Islands Coast Guard stated that efforts, which have been underway since 5am, were being concentrated in an area between Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

“Based on data provided by [United States Coast Guard District 7 Rescue Coordination Centers] the local Search and Rescue team will be focusing their search in an area covering 30 square miles radius,” posted the CICG.

News of the passengers aboard the disaster struck vessel broke yesterday when Customs and Border Control officials stated that one man was taken into custody after having swam to shore.

Initially, it was believed that the nine other passengers aboard the vessel were lost to the sea.

However, seven other refugees were located after a massive search and rescue effort involving fishermen and private boat owners, together with officers from CBC, police, fire and the Coast Guard.

The seven men who were taken into custody by CBC were, at last check, receiving medical treatment at Faith Hospital in Cayman Brac.
