The first collection of Grand Cayman’s new 96-gallon wheeled bins has taken place in Prospect.

The Department of Environmental Health called it a “historic day” and said the milestone could not have been achieved without the cooperation of participating residents, according to a press release issued on Monday.

Over 62% of eligible Prospect residents registered for the Wheeled Bin Pilot Project and received one or more of the bins, based on the number of occupants per household.

The pilot, announced in early August, is expected to impact more than 400 households, covering a range of housing types and geographic locations, and a diversity of communities.

This will allow the six-month-long pilot to identify any issues or concerns that may arise.

DEH Director Richard Simms said he was very proud of the team involved in planning and executing the project.

“And [we] are even more thankful for the support and cooperation from residents living within the selected route,” he said in the press release.

“The first collection of the wheeled bin pilot project not only represents the beginning of a new collection system but it’s also an improved way of storing our garbage.

“September 27, 2023, is definitely a historic day for the Department of Environmental Health.”

Before the first collection, 75% of registered residents received one bin, 20% received two bins and 5% received three or more bins.

Since then, many more registrations have been submitted and another batch of wheeled bins has been scheduled for delivery.

The proposed system aims to test “the implementation of world-class standard mechanised collections from residential locations within the selected route”, the DEH said in the press release.

Residents learned about the new bins through four days of door-to-door visits, a community meeting, six talk shows, and a microsite dedicated to the project.
