Police are trying to determine the identity of a man who was found dead in the water in George Town Harbour shortly before midnight Saturday.

The victim is believed to have drowned, though confirmation of the cause of death is not expected until later on Monday.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service confirmed Sunday afternoon that the man, who had been unresponsive when pulled from the water by Fire Service personnel, had been pronounced dead at the Cayman Islands Hospital.

Police said Port Authority staff had raised the alarm the night before after seeing what appeared to be a person in the water at Hog Sty Bay.

“Efforts are currently underway to ascertain the identity of the man,” the RCIPS said in its release.

When the Cayman Compass arrived on the scene on Saturday night, a police helicopter’s floodlight could be seen scouring the waters nearby, while armed police cordoned off the area.

On the edge of the concrete dock lining the bay lay an unresponsive, shirtless male wearing a pair of red shorts and being tended to by medical personnel.
