The National Weather Service has issued a marine warning starting Monday for the Cayman Islands as a strong cold front approaches the area, bringing with it rough seas.

The Weather Service, in a statement Sunday morning, said the marine warning takes effect from Monday 5 Feb. to Tuesday 6 Feb., and is urging residents to exercise extreme caution over the next couple of days.

“A strong cold-front is expected to enter the Cayman area tomorrow morning with a strong high-pressure system behind the front, over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. As the front moves east of the Cayman Islands, near gale force winds and very rough seas are expected as the pressure gradient increases across the northwest Caribbean,” the statement said.

The Weather Service said residents can expect 4 to 6 foot waves throughout the day on Monday, increasing to 9-13 feet overnight.

Swells of 1 to 3 feet are likely along the south and west coasts.
