Cayman Airways was forced to cancel its La Ceiba flights on Friday after Goloson International Airport in Honduras was rendered inoperable until further notice due to reduced visibility caused by smoke.

The situation remained unchanged on Saturday, according to media reports out of Honduras.

Cayman’s national flag carrier, in an advisory Friday evening, said the situation forced Cayman Airways’ La Ceiba flight KX882, which was scheduled to depart Grand Cayman at 1pm Friday, and KX883, which was scheduled to depart La Ceiba at 2:40pm, to be cancelled.

“As a result of the ongoing uncertainty regarding when visibility will return to safe levels for flight operations, Cayman Airways is scheduling additional flights to transport affected passengers on Tuesday May 21, 2024, weather permitting,” it said.

Media reports out of Honduras stated on Saturday that the disruption was “primarily due to safety concerns over the dense smoke, which has compromised the visibility essential for safe flight takeoffs and landings”.

Cayman Airways has advised that affected passengers would be contacted directly when updates become available, or they may call Cayman Airways Reservations on 345-949-2311 or 800-2791-9422 (toll free in Honduras).

The airline apologized for any inconvenience caused “as a result of visibility conditions in La Ceiba, which are beyond the airline’s control”.
