As businesses and government offices have begun reopening following the passage of Hurricane Beryl, so too have the airports on Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac.

The Cayman Islands Airports Authority shut down the Charles Kirkconnell International Airport at 3pm Wednesday and the Owen Roberts International Airport at 6pm.

Tourists scrambled to catch evacuation flights that were offered just before the airports closed. Though the initial Category 5 storm did not prove as devastating as early predictions showed it could become, visitors had the opportunity to avoid the strong winds and rain that affected the islands since late Wednesday evening.

The airports officially reopened at 3pm today, CIAA said in a press release.

“After an extensive inspection at both airport locations by the CIAA’s operations team, we are pleased to advise that no significant damages were reported,” the authority said.

The Grand Cayman airport is scheduled to receive its first incoming flight from Miami before 7pm. Domestic flights are set to resume tomorrow.

Authority CEO Albert Anderson credited the operations team for its prompt and thorough risk assessment, allowing the airports to reopen quickly.

“The fact that we have been able to return to regular airport operations expeditiously is largely in part to their excellent service over the past 24 hours, and the collaborative efforts of the entire CIAA team and the teams of our committed airport partners,” he said.

The deadly hurricane is continuing its path across the region, now heading toward Mexico.
