One of the most powerful Atlantic storms in history struck Grand Cayman in September 20 years ago. Hurricane Ivan was the size of the state of Texas – and left an indelible mark on the nation.

As Ivan pummelled the island, many people, at one point or another, thought they might not survive. Roofs were ripped off; vehicles were submerged; and terrifying calls for help were made to 911 as well as Radio Cayman.

Many were forced to flee their homes or public shelter in the height of the storm.

Ivan the Terrible was, indeed, a terrifying experience.
