The Cayman Islands National Museum has announced the opening of its latest exhibition, reflecting the islands’ incredible journey of survival and recovery from one of the most devastating storms in Caribbean history.

‘The Resilience of Grand Cayman: Surviving Hurricane Ivan’ exhibition officially opened on Monday, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the devastating storm.

The Category 5 storm hit Grand Cayman with unprecedented force on 11 Sept. 2004, bringing widespread destruction to the islands, but also showing the extraordinary resilience of the people of the Cayman Islands.

Exhibition designer Brian Watler Jr. told the Cayman Compass the exhibition “commemorates the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Ivan, documenting the events surrounding the hurricane as well as the ongoing need for vigilance and preparedness. Though hurricane season ends in November, the exhibition will remain on display, serving as a reminder to the public of the importance of always being prepared.”

The “powerful and timely exhibition” also features a “compelling documentary”, Watler said, produced by government’s department of communications, and uses large-scale images by museum board member Terri Merren.

Visitors will gain insight into the harrowing experiences before, during and after the storm, as well as “the island’s collective memory of the storm and the importance of preparedness as hurricane season draws to a close in November,” Watler added.

The exhibition will be open to the public through May 2025.
