Police have arrested a 30-year-old West Bay man in connection with the robbery of the payroll from a construction company last month.

The man was arrested just before 7:15am on Friday and remains in custody pending further investigations, a police statement said.

He is being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery and other related offenses, in relation to what police have called a “high value robbery” incident.

The incident took place on 18 Nov. in a side car park at the Commercial Centre on Eastern Avenue, which houses the Hyatt Residences site office, at about 3:50pm.

Initial police reports stated that three thieves, one with a firearm, stole an undisclosed sum of money and a cell phone before escaping in a Honda CR-V SUV along Eastern Avenue.

Robbery sparked protest, probe

The theft of the payroll money triggered a shutdown at the construction site of the West Bay Road Hyatt the following day.

Workers downed tools in protest when they were told they would not be paid due to the robbery. Police were called to the scene.

The protest did not last long, as later in the day management came through with at least some of the cash owed, allowing work will restart.

Within days of that protest, a probe into allegations of work permit breaches was launched at the construction site.

Workforce Opportunities and Residency Cayman said it had received complaints that employees and employers at a site on West Bay Road, understood to be the Hyatt Residences project, were working outside the terms of their work permits.

A WORC spokeswoman said at the time that, “This matter will be given the highest priority as WORC’s compliance and enforcement officers continue with investigations.”

No further updates on the probe have been released since it was first announced on 20 Nov.

In relation to the robbery, RCIPS officers who examined the area recovered the stolen phone and the getaway vehicle.

Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward with any information they may have in relation to this matter.
