Letter to the Editor: Learn from Anguilla on AI plan

The Cayman Islands can learn a lesson from Anguilla, which some time ago embarked upon an innovative plan to develop and market an AI web domain.

That venture has been successful beyond what was expected, and Anguilla is reaping such a financial windfall that much of the pressure is removed from its traditional dependency upon tourism. Of equal importance are the opportunities provided for Anguillans in ancillary employment.

The success of Anguilla in this venture reminds me of an adage I heard from Dean Kamen many years ago: ‘The only way to control the future is to invent it’. It may well be that Anguilla’s newfound avenue to financial wellbeing may not last an eternity.

What seems more important in the immediate, however, is that Anguilla seems to have found a way to lessen the pressure on tourism and to provide new employment opportunities for Anguillans.

  1. CIG could do well to assess the AI domain approach on which Anguilla has embarked….before others jump on the bandwagon.

Further, any CIG foray into AI should be comprehensive. Our CS has become too large and bloated and in many cases there seems to be little “I” employed in some actions of some public agencies. AI implemented in some processes would surely improve the inefficiency often experienced in some CS departments.

However, the double-edge of AI will always exist….AI vs job losses. This is a valid concern which CIG would no doubt prioritize.
