Following a tough lost against Costa Rica four days prior, the Cayman Islands women’s national football team returned to the pitch for their final match of the 2025/26 CONCACAF W Qualifiers.
Facing off against Grenada to close out their campaign, Cayman fought hard but ultimately fell short of victory 3-1.
Playing at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in Grenada on 14 April, the Cayman side – positioned 32nd in the CONCACAF rankings – displayed immediate intent as Molly Kehoe found the back of the net in just the fourth minute to give the team an early lead.
Grenada, ranked 25th, eventually pulled away to secure the win with three goals: one in first-half injury time, followed by the remaining two in the 62nd and 88th minutes.
Having previously played Bermuda and Guatemala, the Cayman women have officially concluded the final phase of Group C play for the Qualifiers.
Head coach looks ahead
Reflecting on the Costa Rica and Grenada match, head coach Michael Johnson remains optimistic and forward thinking.
“We will continue to work hard to improve and increase the physical strength, tactical understanding and technical quality of the players,” Johnson said.
“With so many of the squad still at an under-20 age group, the lack of experience at the senior level will not be something we can skip. We will continue to find and play senior friendly games to continue to give these young players more experience,” he said.
Johnson stated that the focus for majority of the squad will now shift to the Under-20 World Cup Qualifiers next year.
“The older players will continue to train and work hard alongside the under-20 girls and help to drive the level and standards of training to help them prepare,” Johnson said.
