The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism is seeking a consultancy firm to update the National Tourism Plan, which sets out the future direction of the tourism industry.
The wide-ranging plan looks at a variety of initiatives and strategies to help boost tourism including marketing campaigns to help the Cayman Islands compete with other destinations, crucial decisions over infrastructure investments and the development of the workforce in the industry.
Tourism plans
The most recent National Tourism Plan update was carried out in 2024. It included an extensive list of priorities, such as growing sports and event tourism, placing a greater focus on eco-tourism, expanding into emerging and secondary tourism markets, adding more routes to the Cayman Airways network, promoting Cayman Brac and Little Cayman as destinations and improving infrastructure in the eastern districts.
Other goals were to establish a public/private partnership to build a new airport terminal, improve public transport, promote greater Caymanian ownership of tourism-related businesses and create a national beautification plan.
The winning agency will be expected to conduct a comprehensive review of the current plan and assess its effectiveness in the current tourism and travel industry worldwide.
It will also have to design and deliver a structured public consultation and stakeholder engagement programme that includes key government agencies, tourism industry stakeholders, community groups and the general public.
Applications have to be submitted on the government’s Bonfire procurement portal by 2 May and the entire project is likely to last 12-18 months. A draft updated National Tourism Plan would be expected by December 2026 with a final plan to be published in April 2027, a year from now.
