The 2026 Inter-Primary Cricket Competition officially got underway on Friday, April 24, as students across the island returned to the pitch for the opening day of competition.
This year’s tournament features 15 schools divided into Zone A and Zone B, with teams competing in both girls’ and boys’ leagues through June.
St. Ignatius Catholic School enters the season as the defending champions in the boys’ league, while Island Primary A holds the defending title for the girls.
Opening day results
Opening day in Zone A saw Island Primary A narrowly defeat East End Primary School with a score of 44 to 43 in the girls’ division, while the Island Primary A boys also secured a win against East End Primary with 70 runs to 59.
In other Zone A action, the Island Primary B girls beat Joanna Clarke Primary School 42 to 39, though the Joanna Clarke Primary boys managed to flip the result by edging out Island Primary B 55 to 54.
In Zone B, Marie Martin Primary School started the season strong by sweeping their matches against Footsteps School.
The Marie Martin Primary girls won 60 to 57, while the boys participated in the first high-scoring encounter of the young season, finishing with 114 runs to Footsteps’ 94.
Cayman Prep A took two victories over Cayman Prep B, winning 58 to 57 runs in the girls’ game and 90 to 67 runs in the boys’ match.
Competition format
The competition follows specific developmental rules, with boys playing 12-over matches and girls playing 8-over matches with each bowler restricted to bowling 3 overs (boys) and 2 overs (girls).
Teams will consist of 11 players playing on fields roughly half the size of a football pitch with games played on Friday afternoons starting at 12pm for the girls and 1pm for the boys at various primary school and sports field venues.
Organised by the Department of Education Services, the Department of Sports and the Cayman Cricket Association, the league continues to receive support from Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd.
The season is set to continue with round two on Friday, 8 May.
