A 52-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a food truck.

The arrest came after two men – one carrying what appeared to be a handgun and the other with a knife – targeted a George Town business on Monday, 25 May at about 9.35pm.

Speaking to the Compass on Wednesday, 27 May, staff said they vowed to carry on after armed robbers stole several hundred dollars from Steam & Spice, a Nepalese food truck on South Church Street.

A staff member confronted by the two men admitted he was terrified by the experience.

The 30-year-old man, who asked not to named, said, “It was a very unpleasant experience. I was scared. They were swinging a gun.”

He added, “I put my hands up – they had a gun.”

The staff member said that the robbers escaped with the food truck’s money box, which contained several hundred dollars.

But he said the business, based in the car park next to Ugland House, would “carry on as usual” despite the incident.

Police said firearms officers who were on patrol in the George Town area rushed to the scene after a 911 call from the business.

The officers checked the surrounding area and spotted two men on bicycles in the Windsor Park area that matched descriptions given by people at the scene of the robbery.

The men saw the police, ditched the bikes and tried to escape on foot.

Officers left their vehicle and chased after the men. The 52-year-old was caught and arrested on suspicion of robbery and other offences.

Police said he remains in custody as enquiries into the incident continued.

They added no one was hurt in the robbery and that no shots had been fired.

The incident is the latest in a string of robberies of businesses in the George Town area.

Recent robberies focus on food trucks

A man was arrested after a robbery at Al La Kebab on Tuesday, 28 April.

The robber, armed with what appeared to be a handgun, pistol-whipped a member of staff and fled with cash and a mobile phone.

A food truck in central George Town was hit the night before by two men, one armed and neither wearing masks, who struck at the premises on North Church Street at about 11.30pm.

They stole cash from the register and from an individual at the food truck at the time.
