Despite low DUI numbers so far this holiday season, police say more than 140 collisions, or an average of about 10 a day, have occurred the RCIPS began its annual 'Winter Guardian' road safety operation on 8 Dec.

Cayman has recorded 14 road deaths to date in 2022, the highest number of fatalities over the last six years, and Deputy Police Commissioner Kurt Walton is appealing to the community to exercise due care while driving to prevent any more loss of lives.

Police and other emergency services responded to more than 25 vehicle collisions over the past weekend, the RCIPS reported.

A total of 228 collisions were recorded in the space of one month and 24 drunk drivers were apprehended as police concluded its 'Operation Winter Guardian' holiday safety exercise.

With the holiday weekend quickly approaching, both Governor Martyn Roper and Deputy Governor Franz Manderson are appealing to motorists to exercise caution on local roads, as collisions continue to increase.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service says there has been an increase in the number of collisions over the past week, adding it appears the vast majority of these collisions occurred due to speeding and people driving under the influence of alcohol.

There were 30 vehicle collisions this weekend on Grand Cayman, marking at least the fourth weekend since July in which there have been 20 or more crashes.
