A 65-year-old visitor from New Zealand died Wednesday after being discovered unresponsive while snorkelling off Seven Mile Beach with his family, according to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.
Officers and emergency services responded to a report of an unresponsive man on a beach at a resort near Governors Beach around 7:15pm, according to a press release issued Thursday.
According to the police, the man was snorkelling when he decided to return to shore on his own. His other family members stayed in the water and, on returning to shore, they could not locate him.
“It was soon discovered that the man was still in the ocean, and on reaching him, it was discovered that he was unresponsive,” police said in the release.
He was helped back to shore and CPR was administered until emergency services arrived and took over.
The man was transported to Cayman Islands Hospital, where an attending doctor pronounced him dead.
Police are inquiring into the circumstances of his death but do not believe it to be suspicious at this time.
