A 53-year-old woman who had been fishing along the Barkers shoreline in West Bay died Sunday morning after being washed into the sea by a large wave, police have said.

Police, fire services, the coast guard and other emergency services were called to the coastline off Conch Point Road just before 11am.

According to a statement issued by the RCIPS Sunday evening, it is believed the woman and a man had been fishing on the shore when the wave struck and caused them both to fall into the water.

The man managed to make it back to shore and raise the alarm, as the woman continued to struggle in the water.

After arriving at the scene, emergency services began searching in the water and along the shoreline. The woman was located by members of the Cayman Islands Fire Service’s Maritime Rescue Unit and brought ashore.
