School hours changed

The Education Department has announced that when schools resume on Wednesday 5 January, all primary and secondary schools will start the day at 8am instead of the usual 8.30 am.

The department has also extended the end of the school day from the usual 2.45 pm to 3pm, allowing schools to gain an extra 30 to 40 minutes of teaching time each day.

The only schools excluded from this plan are the Lighthouse School and the Alternative Education Centre. These institutions will operate from 8.15am until 2.45pm and 8am until 2.45pm respectively. The John Gray High School Year 10 programme at the Agape Family Worship Centre, will also continue to operate from 8.30am until 2.45pm, states a GIS press release.

‘The change to the 8am start for the majority of schools will be kept under review,’ said Chief Education Officer, Mrs. Nyda Flatley.

The George Hicks High School will continue to operate from 8am when the new school year opens. The first shift will run from 8 am until noon and the second shift from 12.30pm until 4.30pm. Parents have been advised of these times in a newsletter provided by the school.

Pick up times in the districts will be at the usual time for mornings as has been since school reopened in November.

Pick up times for the second shift will be 11.15am for the eastern districts, George Town and West Bay.
