‘Blowing in the Wind’ and ‘Running Against the Wind’ could well be the theme songs for this year’s annual Boxing Day Beach Run, which will, by the merest chance, take place on Sunday, 26 December, and again coincidentally, will be conducted along Seven Mile Beach. The 1 ½ mile jaunt over the sands is a proven favourite with residents and visitors alike, who join up each year to renew old acquaintances and establish new friendships.
All participants will be awarded a typical John Broad-designed shirt, and will be eligible for a cornucopia of performance and random prizes, and will also enjoy breakfast catered by the Courtyard by Marriott.
Chris Estwanik, a repeat winner of the Beach run, hopes to be on the island this year, and should add an extra dimension to the festivities. Hoewever, there are other extremely capable individuals expected to toe the line.
Everyone is invited to take part in this fun-filled activity, youngsters up through veterans, which is sponsored by Quin and Hampson, and organised by the Phoenix Athletic Club. Starting point is just north of Hemingway’s and the finish line just shy of Courtyard by Marriott. Entry fee is $15, and pre-registration is encouraged. Run day registration will be conducted at Buckingham Square from 6:30-7:15 am with action starting at 7:30 am. Information is available at 945-3970. A phone call stating the number of breakfasts, shirts, and sizes required would be appreciated.
