The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority and the Royal Cayman Islands Police are issuing a warning to the public and retailers to be aware of counterfeit currency that is believed to be in circulation.
The counterfeit notes are Cayman Islands and US currencies, mainly in denominations of $50 and $100 bills. Merchants are asked to examine notes upon receipt. If a note is suspected to be counterfeit, it should be confiscated and a receipt given reflecting its serial number.
Retailers or members of the public who may come into possession of these or similar notes are asked to contact the Financial Crimes Unit of the RCIP on 949-8797. Any persons with information relating to the counterfeit currency can also call Crime Stoppers at 800-TIPS (8477). Calls to Crime Stoppers are answered in Miami, and callers can remain anonymous while being eligible for a financial reward should information lead to an arrest.
