Cancer walk registration open

It’s not too late to sign up for the Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s annual walk / run.

The Sunday event starts and ends at the Public Beach on West Bay Road.

Organizers recommend that those registrants wishing to walk longer distances, more than six miles, begin at 6am and those wishing to walk the shorter distance of six miles or less begin at 7am.

Jill Howse, of Royal Bank of Canada was the lucky winner of the Early Registrant prize draw of a Cayman Airways ticket to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, states a press release.

All registrants are also eligible for the prize drawing. Prizes include two return tickets to Boston donated by Cayman Airways, a Cayman Brac weekend package donated by Travel Pros, dinner at The Wharf donated by Campbells, jewellery donated by Island Companies and many other prizes and surprises.

Christine Sanders, event coordinator, said there has been a good response to registration for the event and there is still time for people to register. Registration can be done on the day but Ms Sanders recommends registration at one of the many sites prior to the event. Registration is CI$20 and the first 1,000 registrants receive a goodie bag.

The Society would like to thank all of its sponsors including Fosters Food Fair IGA, Cable & Wireless, Z99.9 and Rooster 101.9. It would also like to thank its other major sponsor Progressive Distributors and the product brands they have donated including Le Bleu water, Yoplait Yogurt, Tropicana juices, Gatorade, Hawaiian Tropic and General Mills.

In addition, Appleby Spurling Hunter, Cayman National Corporation, Subway, Re/Max, Maples & Calder, FirstCaribbean International Bank and Truman Bodden & Company have provided sponsorship of the aid stations, situated every mile along the route.

The organizers want participants to be safe and have provided the following safety information:

If you begin your walk or run when it is still dark be sure to wear light coloured clothing and use a flashlight or some form of reflective apparatus so that you are visible to road traffic.

Regardless of when you start your walk or run be sure to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated by drinking water and/or Gatorade provided at aid stations along the route. In addition, you are reminded to walk in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic and use sidewalks and pavements wherever possible.
