Concert helps fund music

John Gray High School and Wesleyan Christian Academy received CI$1,500 each from the proceeds of a 21 April music concert at the First Baptist Church.

The spring concert was one of many events taking place in lieu of this year’s National Children Festival of the Arts.

It was a combined effort between the John Gray High School and Wesleyan Christian Academy music departments, featuring joint school bands and choirs.

On hand to receive the funds were head of John Gray’s music department Mrs. Lorna Bjorklund, and a young Caymanian music graduate Miss Nicole Barnett, along with Principal DeWayne Joslin, who leads the Wesleyan Academy’s music department.

‘The evening was very successful and it was good for our students to be part of a bigger, fuller band,’ said Mr. Joslin. ‘The students got to take part in a full choir and band experience which they don’t normally have a chance to enjoy,’ agreed Ms Barnett.

The contributions will assist the music departments of both schools. John Gray hopes to put the money towards buying a piano and Wesleyan Academy plans to purchase some wind instruments.

‘It was fun working with the Wesleyan Academy’s music department and we hope to be able to join forces again in the future,’ said Mrs. Bjorklund.

NCFA Coordinator Mrs. Stephanie Williams said, ‘We are hopeful that the full National Children Festival of the Arts will go ahead next year as normal, without any setbacks.’
