Clarification on pesticide letter

The letter ‘Blasted with pesticide spray’ (Colette O’Brien, Thursday, 9 June) confuses the roles of various government departments.

We wish to clarify that the Department of Environment is not involved in mosquito spraying. Mosquito spraying is undertaken by the Mosquito Research and Control Unit

Nor is DOE involved with management of landfills and control of house flies there. This is the responsibility of the Department of Environmental Health.

The author of this letter is, however, correct in her observations of DOE’s involvement in the recent Preparing for and Adapting to Climate Change workshop, which was featured on Radio Cayman’s Talk Today – and we are pleased that the author found this discussion so interesting and informative.

Gina Ebanks-Petrie, Director, Department of Environment
