SMB PO reopens with fanfare

Cayman’s storm-damaged Seven Mile Beach Post Office got the stamp of approval from all concerned when it re-opened on Wednesday.

The facility, with more than 2,200 post-office boxes, had been closed for nine months after severe damage from Hurricane Ivan.

The West Shore Centre building suffered extensive structural and water damage from a collapsed roof and four feet of flood water.

Since then, customers have been receiving their mail at the Airport Post Office.

Postmaster General Sheena Glasgow told an audience, which included Governor and Mrs. Bruce Dinwiddy, that the facility had 2,268 boxes, and that between two people and three people received mail at each box.

It was the third-largest such facility on Grand Cayman, Ms Glasgow said.

Leader of Government Business Kurt Tibbetts said the Seven Mile Beach office, which had more than one-fifth of the island’s post-office boxes and played a key role in the system, had been the most seriously damaged postal facility on Grand Cayman.

Community Services Minister Arden McLean said Cayman’s postal services ranked with the best in the region.

He wanted to see the national postal system try to increase its revenue and earning capabilities.

Functions such as bill-paying for utilities could be expanded, he suggested.

Even modern technology, could not substitute for the arrival of a birthday card from a relative or friend, he said, and there was no reason why the postal service could not go from strength to strength.

Ms Glasgow welcomed talk of opportunities for growth and earnings, saying it echoed her message.
