George Town’s major hoteliers were playing down the threat of Hurricane Emily Saturday afternoon.
Horace Farquharson, duty manager at the Marriott Beach Resort said only 19 of the 119 rooms they had booked had been vacated by Saturday morning.
‘We had over 200 guests in the hotel and those who want to leave are doing so.’
Further along West Bay Road at the Westin Casuarina, Morvan Bodden of the Human Resources Department, said: ‘We are not expecting a mad rush of people leaving and we have an action plan which we are putting into operation.’
At Sunset House Dive Resort on South Church Street they were taking things a little more seriously. Mike Sullivan, assistant manager in the accommodation section of the complex, said: ‘We are preparing for a hurricane and we are no longer taking bookings.
‘The dive shop is closed and the boats have taken to a safe harbour.’
Sunset had 15 guests remaining on site. They have 59 rooms with a capacity of 118 people. My Bar on the complex was however still operating normally.
