Sand sculpting apprenticeships

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is seeking two apprentices to understudy professional sand sculptors from the company Sanding Ovations in the U.S.

The company will be in the Islands in November this year for the third annual sand sculpting competition, according to a Government Information Services release.

Each apprentice will be provided with the necessary tools, and will work with two sculptors for three days, between November 10 and 12. In addition to learning beach sand art form, the apprentices will be each paid a stipend of CI$300.

It is planned that the apprentices and the professional sand sculptors will join forces to create the main sand sculpture of the annual event.

The release adds that the mini-apprenticeship is a good opportunity for Caymanian artists to train with some of the best in the field.

National Gallery director Nancy Barnard noted, ‘We want to eventually have our own sand sculptors responsible for the creation of these masterpiece sculptures for the annual event, rather than having to seek sculptors from overseas.’

Those wanting to apply should contact the National Gallery by 15 September by sending an email to [email protected] or calling 945-8111. Applicants must be Caymanian and at least 16 years old.
