Putting recycling on the road

When it comes to being creative, one Bodden Town resident is not deflated.

Some may call it art, some junk, or trendy garden décor, but tire wall designer Buddy Wood said they make good crash barriers, unusual fencing and add beauty to his property.

Huge truck tires painted blue, grey and white form a Loch Ness design around the perimeter of the property.

The wall of tires came about when Mr. Wood, who lives in Pease Bay, sought a solution to make good use of discarded tires that came from his trucking business.

‘I needed to come up with some good use for them after saving them for over five years, plus mosquitoes were starting to use them as a breeding ground,’ he said.

‘It seemed like too much trouble to take them to the dump. I did think about beautifying the old Everglo drive-in property with them but that also did not pan out.’

Mr. Wood said it struck him one day that the tires would make a nice fence and protective barrier because cars were always crashing into the cement wall.

‘So I got my workmen to line up the tires and paint them different colours and to see how people like it.

‘Motorists passing have commented on how nice they look.

‘I have buried the tires in the ground so mosquitoes can no longer use them as a breeding ground. Tires will last a long time like that,’ he said.

Mr. Wood said about 100 tires were used to line his property, which does not even put a dent in the amount of tires he has collected over the years. ‘I go through about 50 tires a year for three trucks.’

Mr. Wood said he also has intentions of forming other designs which would beautify them even more.
