There’s one radio station in the Cayman Islands that constantly offers what none other does – a steady stream of country music.
Rooster 101.9 is the premier country music radio show in the country, offering music, commentary, news, games and a much-listened to talk show.
‘Country music a great part of Cyaman’s heritage,’ said Operations Manager Keith. ‘For many years, the most easily heard stations here played country music. In addition, I’m told that many Caymanian seafarers were exposed to country music during their travels and brought the love of country music home with them.
‘Right now, country music is the music that cuts across the most demographic lines of any music format.
‘Everyone loves it from doctors and lawyers to laborers, and men and women of all ages.
In addition to keeping listeners entertained with tear in their beer songs or who done who wrong epics, Rooster also provides the most up-to-date news.
‘We are full affiliates of (Atlanta-based) CNN Radio news, which gives us access to all the resources of one of the world’s great news gathering organizations,’ said News Director Mike Hennessy. ‘We are always proud of our partnership with the Caymanian Compass, which gives us access to the best local news coverage.
‘We do news 24 hours a day seven days a week, except during our weekend specialty shows, Jeff Foxworthy and Bill Cody’s Classic Country show. The news runs at the top of the hour, with local news first, followed by CNN Radio’s hourly newscast for what we call Total News.
‘Between our local contacts, the resources of the Internet and our affiliation with the Caymanian Compass we are able to bring listeners, not only the latest local and international news, but also Caribbean regional news.
‘I write and edit most of the news along with Joyce Bender, who is an exceptionally experienced news woman with an incredible radio background.’
Listeners who can’t get the radio station via conventional means were recently given an added opportunity to hear the station, which began streaming its broadcasts via
www.rooster101.ky in February.
‘The response has been wonderful, especially during our round the clock coverage of Hurricane Emily,’ said Mr. Hennessy. ‘We were getting responses from all over the U.S. and here in Cayman with people letting us know they appreciated having first hand information about the situation.
‘We have regular listeners as far away as the U-K and Lithuania.’
