Spirit Airlines has changed its baggage rules and is now allowing cardboard boxes because of a readers’ letter in Tuesday’s edition of the Caymanian Compass.
Having read Alan Darvill’s letter regarding its baggage rules, the airline decided to take a look and review the policy, believing the letter writer had a good point, said Chief Marketing Officer for the airline, Barry Biffle.
The letter writer had written to alert people of Spirit Airline’s baggage restrictions, including the exclusion of cardboard boxes.
‘As many residents visit the US for the purpose of shopping and return with TV sets and all manner of boxed items they should be aware of the Spirit restrictions,’ he had written.
As a result, effective Wednesday, 8 February, Spirit will begin to accept cardboard boxes on all Spirit flights, domestic and international. The following conditions apply to this policy:
Customer will need to sign a Limited Liability Release waiver;
The cardboard box must meet the same size restrictions contained in the airline’s Baggage Acceptance Policy. Excess, oversize, and overweight charges apply;
The cardboard box must have the strength to hold the contents or will not be accepted. The cardboard boxes should not be used as luggage.
Mr. Biffle continued, ‘We would like to thank Alan for bringing his valuable insight to our attention, welcoming Spirit to Grand Cayman, and for choosing to fly with us’.
A press release outlines how the new policy will work: Cardboard boxes that can be checked are brand new microwave in original manufacturer’s box or new 19″ colour TV in box;
Cardboard boxes that cannot be checked are used cardboard boxes being used as luggage tied up with twine.
‘Spirit is a new kind of carrier dedicated to customer service and this is one great example of just how nimble and responsive we can be.
‘We are grateful to the wonderful support we have received thus far and look forward to starting service on Thursday with our new planes, great low fares, and a new spirit of flying,’ said Mr. Biffle.
In Mr. Darvill’s letter he also outlined a weight restriction of 50lbs per piece of checked luggage (compared to 70lbs with CAL and others).
However, Spirit Airlines will take overweight bags at a charge of 51lbs-70lbs $25 and $71lbs -90lbs $250 per bag.
