A grey and cloudy dawn greeted the runners at Gun Bay, East End at the start of the Cross Island Relay last Sunday. This was the 32nd such event, sponsored this year by Scotiabank & Trust (Cayman) Limited.
After last year’s invitational race, a full field of 21 teams gathered on the line for the usual 6.30am start. Many of the teams were corporate entries with UBS fielding three teams of six runners each.
Deloittes, KPMG, Close Brothers, Fidelity and Admiral Administration were also represented.
The Hash House Harriers as organisers had two teams and there were also triathletes and the Hews family amongst others.
It was clear from the start that the triathletes team ‘Are We There Yet?’ were in a class of their own as they took an early lead which they never lost. They finished first in a time of 2hrs 32.35 mins.
As the race progressed the day remained cloudy, which was helpful to the runners, especially in the later stages. There was also a cool following wind.
The teams made their way through Bodden Town, Savannah and South Sound before finishing at the John Grey High School field – a change from the Truman Bodden Sports Centre which was closed for renovations.
In second place was the young ‘Slap Dash’ team which featured several well known local runners.KPMG managed a credible third place. The first ladies team wwas ‘The Chicklets’ in a time of 3hrs 37.13 mins.
Overall fastest male was Marius Acker in 23.02 mins and the fastest female was Maria Mays in 26.08 mins – each for a 4 mile leg.
After the race the participants enjoyed a breakfast hosted by the Hash House Harriers whilst numerous spot prizes were awarded.
